Sen. Grassley is a Republican from Iowa. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a single thing that I agree with him on — until now. Caveat: he may have been on the progressive side of some issue, but I can’t remember what it was/is, so I can’t count that. He’s investigating the pharmaceutical industry’s ties to psychiatrists. Simply put, he’s investigating whether the money that the industry gives/pays for psychiatric research is tainting the results of that research.
This is nothing new in the sense that for decades industry groups have often paid for research that mysteriously ended up supporting their positions. We saw it perfected for years by the tobacco industry. A few million dollars here, a few million dollars there and voila: a recent study found that cigarette smoking is as healthy as running 5 miles a day and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Studies to the contrary were all conducted by quacks.
So, attempting to stay intellectually honest and judging events by their facts and not by who is involved in them, I salute Sen. Grassley, a Republican.
